Stories of Ohio Women in Information Technology Video

4Jan

Girls now surpass boys in nearly every measure of academic success.Yet, even as girls open new gender gaps by outpacing their male peers in most subjects, men still receive roughly 77 percent of the bachelor’s degrees awarded in engineering and 85 percent of those in computer science.

What a WONDERFUL day!  We Are IT 2009 is history, yet it’s just the beginning for over 2700 Ohio girls.  There are many more opportunities for young women to get involved in workshops, competitions and projects that engage them in technology.  Thanks to the support of ODE, business and industry and participating Ohio colleges, all who appreciate the talents that our girls bring to IT and STEM careers, many more opportunities are on the horizon.

How did it all begin?  Sara Mazak, consultant to ODE for the IT Pathways, and Patti Ross, Dean of IT and Engineering at Edison College, discussed the possibilities while traveling back from a conference.  The seed was planted.  At itWORKS in the spring of 2006 the first meeting of the We Are IT Steering Committee was held over lunch – the vision was set in motion.

Sara Mazak developed the framework and presented her ideas to the State Business Advisory Council, who supported the ideas.  The very first We Are IT conference was launched later that year when a preliminary event was held at Edison College.  It was a huge success and the following month the first statewide We Are IT day was held at campuses all over Ohio.

With Sara’s unending support and guidance We Are IT has not only grown to be a hugely successful professional conference for girls interested in technology, but has succeeded in attracting quality young women to some of the best and most lucrative careers Ohio has to offer.  This year the 2009 We Are It was the fourth annual event with 2700 girls registered to participate statewide at over 20 college campuses.

Thanks to everyone for another year of exposing one of Ohio’s finest resources, our young ladies, to hands-on workshops, keynote speakers and professional women from our colleges and local business.  And thank you Sara for having the vision to create this opportunity for Ohio girls.

An estimated 2,700 girls from Ohio school Grades 7-10 are expected to converge on 19 state college and university campuses for Ohio’s annual We Are IT day on Friday, Nov. 13. The objective of the day is to increase middle-to-early high school girls’ interest in traditionally male-dominated programs in Information Technology (IT) and other Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers.

The Ohio Department of Education, Office of Career-Technical Education, is the sponsoring the activity in collaboration with the Ohio IT Business Advisory Network. Campuses are participating with tours, displays, speakers and hands-on activities.

We Are IT Day is supported through federal Carl. D. Perkins funds. Governor Ted Strickland issued a resolution, declaring Nov. 13 We Are IT Day in Ohio.

Are you interested in participating in We Are IT, a wonderful opportunity to bring young women – potential bright and enthusiastic students –  to your campus?

  • We Are IT motivates our young ladies to investigate a future in STEM careers.  Today’s labor market is comprised of nearly fifty percent women, yet the percentage of CS bachelor’s degrees granted to women is lower than ever.  Many top departments are reporting female enrollments of fewer than 10 percent in their CS major programs.  It’s time for a change.

Find out how you can join campuses all over Ohio as we try to reverse the trend and tap this valuable resource.  Visit the link below.  Join us in 2010.

Welcome to my first scary adventure in the world of BLOG.  If I teach it, it only makes sense that I should try it, right?

It’s natural to have a fear of the unknown, so my plan is to make Social Media and Social Marketing my friend.  No one cares what I’ve done in the past, it’s all about the future; and Social Networking IS the future.  Whether I’m ready or not!  So I better get ready; witness my first baby step.

What has given me the courage to venture into this world of tomorrow?  In just one month, all around the state of Ohio – on November 13, 2009 to be exact – young girls will converge on 19 college campuses to see why Technology is no longer a man’s world.  Why it’s more than heads-down coding in a cubicle.  Why it is actually FUN!

Governor Strickland will again this year proclaim this very special day as We Are IT Day in Ohio.  An exciting day when young women “get their hands dirty” so to speak, attend workshops, and actually participate in the wonderful world of technology: Graphic Arts, Video Production, Animation, Social Media (I should take that workshop) Gaming, Forensics … And the list goes on.

If you know a young lady in grades 8 through 10, share the good news!  Tell her to visit www.weareit.org to find the nearest campus hosting the conference. And if the enrollment is full, continue following the event for other opportunities throughout the year.

After all, it’s not just for boys anymore!
